Gertrude (Johnson) Pree

Gertrude Pree, age 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on June 7,
2026. She was born on March 23, 1942, in Lewisville, Arkansas, to the late Grady Johnson Sr.
and Annie Mae Pierce Johnson. Gertrude was educated in the Texarkana school system and
proudly graduated from Booker T. Washington High School with the Class of 1961.

Shortly after graduation, she met the love of her life, Willis “Mutt” Pree, at the local Polar Bear.
Their love story blossomed into a lifelong partnership, and they were united in marriage in 1961.
Affectionately known throughout the community as “Mutt and Gert,” the couple shared a
beautiful life together and were blessed with three children.

Gertrude began her professional career at Lone Star Ammunition Plant, where she made history
as the first female forklift driver. Through hard work, determination, and perseverance, she built
a remarkable career and retired after more than 30 years of dedicated service.

At an early age, Gertrude accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and remained steadfast in her
faith throughout her life. She was a devoted member of Tower of Power Church in Texarkana,
Arkansas, where she faithfully worshipped and served for many years. After relocating to Dallas,
Texas, she came under the watch care of The Embassy Church, where she continued to grow in
faith and fellowship.A true servant at heart, Gertrude faithfully served as an usher and was an
active member of the hospitality committee. She found joy in welcoming others and ensuring
that everyone felt loved, valued, and cared for. Her warm spirit, gentle smile, and willingness to
serve reflected the love of Christ in her daily life.

Gertrude was also known for her exceptional gift in the kitchen. Few people could rival her
Southern-style home cooking. Whether preparing Sunday dinner, holiday meals, or simply
feeding family and friends, she cooked with love and excellence. Her recipes, traditions, and
warm hospitality brought people together and created countless cherished memories.
When she was not serving her church, caring for her family, or cooking for loved ones. Nanny
enjoyed one of her favorite pastimes—playing bingo, where she was better known as “SMILEY”
.She loved the excitement of the game, the fellowship it brought, and the friendships she formed
along the way. Her competitive spirit, joyful laughter, and enthusiasm made every bingo
gathering a memorable occasion. For Gertrude, bingo was never just a game it was another
way she connected with others and spread joy wherever she went.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents, Grady Johnson Sr. and Annie Mae Pierce
Johnson; her beloved husband, Willis “Mutt” Pree, her cherished grandson, Troydricus, and her
beloved brother, Grady Johnson, Jr.

Better known as “Nanny” and “Patagonia”. She leaves to cherish her continued legacy, her three
beloved children: Teresa (Bill), Anthony (Cynthia), and Tayloria (Michael). She was a proud and
devoted “NANNY” to eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. She is also survived
by her brother, James Johnson (Pat), and her sister, Lillie Mae Black. She held a special place
in her heart for her bonus grandsons, Antron Burks and Andonique Burks, and her beloved
goddaughter and niece, Rochelle Black.

Nanny also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members,
church family, and dear friends who will forever cherish her. Although our hearts are heavy, we
rejoice in knowing that Nanny’s life was well lived and her faith never wavered.
