James Sloan Obituary

James Arthur Sloan, age 85, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on
March 17, 2026.

He was born on May 14, 1940, in Malakoff, Texas, to Arthor Sloan and Mary Vaughn
Sloan, who both preceded him in death. James graduated from Malakoff Negro High
School in 1956, where he first met the love of his life, Cecelia Barron Sloan.

Following graduation, he moved to Brownwood, Texas, to begin his career, not yet
knowing the remarkable path ahead of him. He attended trade school and became a
Licensed Vocational Nurse, beginning a lifelong dedication to caring for others.
James proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1960 to 1962. During
his service, he was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, and Fort Lee, Virginia, and also
completed a tour in Korea.

After returning home, he established his life in Dallas, Texas, where He attended trade
school and became a Licensed Vocational Nurse, beginning a lifelong dedication to
caring for others. After completing school, in 1965 he began working as a Licensed
Psychiatric Vocational Nurse at the Dallas Veterans Affairs Hospital. He faithfully served
veterans with compassion and dedication for 31 years, retiring in 1996. Even after
retirement, he continued working in the healthcare field with home health agencies,
such as Home Care Network and others, building meaningful and lasting relationships
with those he cared for.

At the heart of James’s life was his beloved wife of 50 years, Cecelia Sloan. In 1976,
they were united in matrimony and shared a lifelong partnership filled with love,
devotion, and countless cherished memories. They found joy in simple things,
especially spending time together on their favorite outings, like shopping at Walmart,
where they enjoyed picking out the little things that brought them happiness.
James Sloan was a devoted father to his six children; Alton Sloan, who preceded him in
death, Sharon Rowlett (Willie), Tyecha Sloan, who also preceded him in death,
Laquenetha “Larky” Sloan, Senior Pastor Michael Green (Pastor Tayloria), and
Dominique Sloan.

He was a proud grandfather to eleven grandchildren and eleven
great-grandchildren, and a cherished “Papa” to Devin Caruthers and Kalab Garrett. His
love, guidance, and generous spirit will continue to live on through each of them.

He also created a lasting legacy with his great-grandson, King, affectionately known as
“Boo”. He named his favorite juice after him-“Boo Juice” – a special tradition that
remains a favorite and is still requested and enjoyed by the family today. It is one of the
many heartfelt ways his memory will continue to bring smiles and connection to those
who love him.

Bro. James Sloan was an active and devoted member of The Embassy Church in
Lancaster, Texas, where he was faithful, dedicated, and loved by many. He was a vital
part of the Embassy Usher Ministry, an honorary Trustee, and was a faithful volunteer
with the Ambassadors Harvest Outreach Ministry. He brought laughter, joy, and
encouragement to all he encountered and became a beloved “Papa” to Trinity and
Josiah Richmond, along with many others blessed by his kindness and wisdom.

Having spent a lifetime in the healthcare industry, James’s commitment to caring for
others extended into his everyday life. His family will always remember his familiar
phrase: “If you enter the kitchen, WASH YOUR HANDS” –a simple reflection of his
dedication to health and care.

He will be deeply missed by his favorite cousin, Rodney Roland; his niece, Vanessa
Caruthers (Donald); his nephew, Wayne Chambers; and his in-laws, Linda Dawson,
Carolyn Henderson, and Janice Peterson (Philmore IV), along with many extended
family members and dear friends.

James lived a life of faith and service, reflecting the words of Matthew 25:23: “Well
done, good and faithful servant.. you have been faithful over a few things, I will make
you ruler over many things.” His life stands as a testament to that calling.
His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him, and his legacy of
love, compassion, and service will never be forgotten.

He was preceded in death by his father: Arthor Sloan; mother: Mary Vaughn; brother:
Eugene Sloan; and brother- Cousin Gene Roland.

James Sloan leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife, Cecelia Sloan, his children;
Laquenetha “Larky” Sloan, Senior Pastor Michael Green (Pastor Tayloria), Dominique
Sloan, and Sharon Rowlett (Willie), grandchildren; great grandchildren; and a host
nieces and nephews, and extended family members and friends who will cherish his
memory.
